This year will mark the 80th anniversary of the rescue, and I'm hoping to organise a display of photos of the trawler Shackleton with some of the original equipment used in the rescue (breeches buoy, rocket lines etc) as well as the last surviving eyewitness to the rescue. If anyone knows of any of the descendants of the crew who were on the Shackleton or has photos of the Shackleton, it would be great to hear from them.

My name is Allan and im a 16 year old school leaver, farther has been a fisherman now for 40 years and I too am hoping to go into the bussines. Only problem is I have no idea how to go about it.
After looking online on various sources the only thing I could come up with was Alaskan fishing (I suspect too many people watch deadliest catch =/ ).
My dad now lives in fleetwood and after asking him about it he thinks he may be able to persuade his skipper to let me on as a trainee deckhand. he doubts it and so I am coming to seek out advice of any local fishing vets if you will.
I am a highly smart kid who has an endless love for the sea, My love must come from my farther, or my love of pirates, both things are close to my heart. I really want your advice, how should, could can I get into the fishing business, ive heard all the storys about working conditions, but I dont care.
I say a good days work for a good days pay. Any advice would be greatly helpful to my cause.

Hi ... new here!

I'm a bit confused on the Section:
War Service
FLEETWOOD TRAWLERS (either former, current or future) INVOLVED IN OPERATION NEPTUNE – NORMANDY LANDINGS 23 May – 30 June 1940

I'm trying to trace my dad's wartime history, and one of the trawlers he served on with the RNPS, the Lune (FD59), is listed among those ships in the above Section. However, as you can see, it says "Normandy Landings 23 May - 30 June 1940" which is actually the dates of the Dunkirk Evacuation, not the Normandy Landings. My dad served on the Lune from February 1940 through May 1941 and I was curious to know if it was actually the Dunkirk evacuations the Lune was involved with (in which case my dad was there), or the Normandy Landings in 1945. Hope this makes sense! Thanks for your help with this.

I have just returned from Grytviken in South Georgia near the Antarctic.
On the beach there is an old abandoned steam trawler. Named `DIAZ`.

She was built in 1906 in Beverley, Hull for the Hellyar Fleet and named `VIOLA` H868.
She served in the first World War as an armed patrol ship with a gun on deck.
She sailed out of Hull and Fleetwood, does anyone have any family connections then??
In 1927 she was sold to the Argentinians, renamed `DIAZ` and registered in Buenos Aires. She was used as a whaler and sealer.
When I was there the man who looks after the Museum said there was someone interested in bringing her back to the UK for preservation.
It would be a very expensive job considering the distance of around 10,000 miles. Does anyone have any news of that??

I have photos of her.
Cheers

Good Evening,

I am looking for information on the following companies,

Newton & Sons Ltd
Alvis Trawlers Ltd
Fern Leaf Co Ltd

I know very little about Alvis and Fern Leaf. I know that Newton & Sons Ltd where shipwrights in Fleetwood from 1870 until 1977. I believe Newton’s built pleasure boats and also built a lot for the admiralty. Also I am lead to believe they owned a few trawlers working from the town.

I think there is a connection between the three companies. William Newton was manager for Alvis and Fern Leaf during the 50s and also for Newton’s. Unfortunately this is all I know.

My Mother in law is a descendant of the Newton’s and know a fair amount about what the company did in the later years. Unfortunately this side of the business is a dark area and very little is known.
Any information, images or general memories of any of the companies would be very welcome and greatly received.

Thanks

Just thought I would make myself known, I was at the old Navigation School in Station Rd in 1957, Cpt McFarlane was the princpal at this time, and Cpt Caruthers was seamanship tutor, before becoming principal at the new college. I was one of the few students doing my pre sea training prior to joining the MN. Lot of fond memories of the old town, went back to live there in 1970/76 before moving south.
